Books

I typically work on projects in alternating phases, I am currently cycling through three different novels in three very different genres: literary coming-of-age, a fictional apocalyptic archive, and a historical fantasy. All three of these projects are delightfully, devastatingly queer and delve into the mechanics of trauma. You'll find a brief summary of each below.

SHADE ABOVE SHADE

A coming-of-age Southern Gothic novel currently 37,000 words long. While the characters are eighteen, this is not a YA novel and is intended for adult audiences.

Fresh out of high school, Charlie Golden finds herself living with her best friend Eden Hayes and her strange little family outside of town. As the summer goes on, Charlie tries to find her place among the Hayeses and falls deeper into her obsession with Eden, who is still reeling from a violent tragedy. The same tragedy which left another friend, Georgia, dead.

Charlie learns that the Hayes family—including a grandmother losing herself to dementia and a housewife who sells witchcraft like Mary Kay—is more than a little strange, and the magic they do isn't just for show. With a wildfire devouring the surrounding county and a strange rotting disease creeping up on the Hayes house, Charlie is haunted by dreams of Georgia—culminating in a strange magical experiment where Eden brings Georgia (mostly) back from the dead.

With Georgia up and walking again, Charlie has new concerns. How will this resurrection affect her relationship with Eden? How long can they keep Georgia from decaying? Does Charlie even want to save Georgia? Charlie's grasp on reality and herself start slipping through her fingers, forcing her to confront her own capacity for violence and sacrifice. Will she try to make a change in the Hayes family or will she make the sacrifices necessary to finally be with her beloved?

7HEADS, 7CROWNS

An apocalyptic fictional archive currently 15,000 words long.

Six apostles follow a zombie dyke Christ-figure through the wastelands of the former American South, decked in black leather and riding demonic motorcycles.

Each perspective takes its own form as the apostles chronicle a new Revelation and the Earth begins its final decline into death:

  7. And the pre-apocalypse memories of an unknown woman

THE VAMPYRE

A historical fantasy novel currently at 10,000 words.

In 1819 London, Margaret Sterling is officially "on the shelf" and consigns herself to life as a spinster, having long given up on her dreams of being a professional soprano. Then, she meets the enigmatic Emelisse and Estienne Aubert and falls quickly in love with both of them. The Auberts harbor many secrets, namely that they are not two different humans but one vampyre living two lives.

When Estienne reveals this essential secret, Margaret agrees to marry him and leave England for Vienna. The newly weds are introduced to the city's vibrant musical community, meeting a number of real historical musicians and patrons. Together, Emelisse and Margaret collaborate on a opera—one where Margaret gets to be the star—but are held back by censorship and a fiend from Estienne's past.

A vampyre Margaret narrates the final years of her human life: the pursuit of her dream and her complicated marriage, contemplating music, literature, and what it means to be human.
